Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has reaffirmed his pledge to serve only one term if elected president, saying he would not stay in office beyond four years “even with a gun to my head.”

Obi made the statement in a viral interview clip from News Central TV, where he stressed that his one-term commitment is rooted in his belief in leadership discipline, accountability, and stability in governance.

The Presidency, through the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, dismissed Obi’s vow, arguing that his past political movements show inconsistency and make his promise unreliable.

Onanuga said Obi had changed political platforms multiple times over the years and should not be taken at his word regarding long-term political commitments.

Obi, who came third in the 2023 presidential election, has consistently maintained that he would only spend one term in office if elected in 2027, arguing that four years is enough to set Nigeria on a new developmental path.

The statement has continued to generate political debate ahead of the 2027 elections.
