Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to consider increasing Nigeria’s minimum wage to N100,000, citing rising living costs and the economic realities facing workers across the country.

AbdulRazaq made the appeal during a public event in Ilorin, where he reportedly acknowledged the economic difficulties confronting many Nigerians and stressed the need for stronger welfare support for workers.

According to the governor, the current minimum wage is no longer sufficient to meet the basic needs of workers because of inflation, rising food prices, transportation costs, and broader economic pressures.

He reportedly urged the Federal Government to continue prioritising workers’ welfare and ensure that salary structures reflect prevailing economic conditions.

The governor also commended Tinubu’s administration for ongoing economic reforms but noted that additional measures would be needed to ease hardship and improve citizens’ purchasing power.

His comments come amid continued debates between labour unions, state governments, employers, and federal authorities over wage adjustments and workers’ welfare.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and other labour groups have repeatedly argued that existing wage levels are inadequate given current economic realities and inflationary pressures.

As of the time of reporting, the Federal Government had not officially responded to AbdulRazaq’s proposal for a N100,000 national minimum wage.
