Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has withdrawn from the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary election in the state, citing the need to preserve peace, stability, and unity in Rivers State.
Fubara announced his decision in a statement personally signed on Wednesday night, saying the move followed “deep reflection and extensive consultations” with family members, friends, and political associates.
“After deep reflection and extensive consultations with my family, friends, and associates, I have taken the difficult but necessary decision to withdraw from the APC gubernatorial primaries,” the governor stated.
According to him, leadership sometimes requires sacrifice and personal ambition must give way to the collective interest of the people. He stressed that Rivers State’s peace and political stability were more important than individual aspirations.
Fubara also pledged to support whoever emerges as the APC governorship candidate, urging party members and supporters to remain united ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The governor hinted at underlying political tensions surrounding the primary process but avoided giving specific details. “Not everything a hunter sees in the forest is spoken of in the marketplace,” he said, suggesting that certain issues were better handled quietly for the sake of peace.
Fubara expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu and the APC leadership for what he described as their support and encouragement throughout the political process.
His withdrawal comes amid prolonged political tension in Rivers State involving rival factions within the APC and the lingering power struggle linked to former governor and current FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.
The development has already sparked reactions across the state’s political landscape, with analysts describing the move as a significant shift ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
