Four migrants have been found dead near the border between Croatia and Slovenia in a suspected human smuggling incident, Croatian authorities have confirmed.

Police said the group was discovered in the early hours after being transported in “inhumane conditions” inside a truck, alongside several other migrants who were later rescued and taken for medical attention. Two of the survivors were reported to be in serious condition and were rushed to hospital.

According to officials, a total of about 13 other migrants were found in the same area near a village southwest of Zagreb and have since been moved to a detention facility for processing and investigation.

Preliminary reports suggest the group may have been abandoned by a smuggler who fled the scene, leaving them stranded near the border region. Authorities have not yet confirmed the exact cause of death, but investigations are ongoing to determine whether suffocation, exhaustion, or exposure played a role.

The Croatia–Slovenia route has remained a known passage for migrants attempting to reach Western Europe, and officials say it is frequently exploited by human trafficking networks operating along the Balkan corridor.

The incident adds to growing concern over migrant safety in the region, where dangerous crossings and smuggling operations continue to claim lives despite tighter border enforcement across the EU zone.
