Heavy flooding has submerged a collapsed bridge in Kwara State, leaving commuters stranded and disrupting movement along a key transport route in the area.

The incident occurred after days of intense rainfall, which worsened the condition of an already damaged bridge, making the crossing completely impassable for vehicles and pedestrians.

According to earlier reports, the bridge had previously collapsed following structural failure under heavy load, cutting off a major link along the Ilorin–Igbeti corridor in Asa Local Government Area.

The latest flooding has now worsened the situation, submerging diversion routes and trapping commuters who were attempting to navigate alternative paths. Many road users were reportedly left stranded for hours as water levels rose rapidly around the affected area.

Residents described the situation as dangerous and frustrating, noting that movement of goods and services between Kwara and neighbouring states has been severely affected. Some commuters were forced to turn back or seek unsafe routes to escape the flooded zone.

The Kwara State Government had earlier directed traffic diversion and deployed engineers to the area to manage the collapse and reduce hardship for road users. Authorities also urged motorists to exercise caution and cooperate with emergency traffic arrangements.

Flooding has become a recurring challenge in several parts of Nigeria, often worsening existing infrastructure failures and leaving rural and urban communities cut off during heavy rainfall periods.

Officials are expected to continue monitoring the situation as efforts to restore access and carry out repairs on the damaged bridge progress.
