China has called for deeper tourism and cultural cooperation with Nigeria, urging both countries to strengthen people-to-people exchanges as part of efforts to boost mutual understanding and bilateral relations.
The appeal was made by the Director of the China Cultural Centre in Nigeria, Yang Jianxing, during the 2026 China Tourism Day celebration held in Abuja. He emphasized that tourism remains one of the strongest tools for building friendship between nations and breaking cultural barriers.
Yang encouraged more Nigerians to visit China and experience its historical landmarks, cultural heritage, and modern development. He also expressed China’s interest in welcoming more Chinese tourists to Nigeria to explore its rich traditions, natural attractions, and cultural diversity.
According to him, both countries share long-standing civilizational histories and possess unique cultural assets that can serve as bridges for stronger cooperation. He highlighted iconic sites such as China’s Great Wall and Nigeria’s Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove and Zuma Rock as symbols of cultural identity that can promote tourism exchange and understanding between both peoples.
He further noted that recent cultural programs and festivals between China and Nigeria have already helped deepen ties, with both countries benefiting from artistic collaborations, exhibitions, and exchange initiatives. These engagements, he said, have strengthened friendship and promoted the idea of harmony in diversity.
Stakeholders at the event also reiterated the importance of language learning and cultural education as key drivers of international cooperation. They encouraged Nigerians to explore opportunities in Chinese language studies and cultural exchange programs to enhance global engagement.
China and Nigeria continue to expand cooperation in areas such as trade, infrastructure, education, and tourism, with both governments describing cultural diplomacy as a vital part of their long-term relationship.
