British authorities have launched a manhunt for a British-Nigerian man, Ifedayo Adeyeye, after he was mistakenly released from prison while serving a sentence linked to the abduction of his young son.
According to reports, Adeyeye had been jailed in the United Kingdom for contempt of court after failing to return his five-year-old son, Laurys, to the child’s mother following an international custody dispute involving France and Nigeria.
The convict was accidentally freed from HMP Pentonville in north London on April 21, 2026. A UK court later heard that prison officials failed to notify police immediately, giving him about a three-day head start before authorities realised the mistake and launched a search operation.
During a hearing, Justice Hayden criticised the prison system over what he described as a serious failure, saying Adeyeye reportedly “strolled about” London, had dinner at a pub, and transferred money before disappearing.
Authorities now believe he may have fled the UK, with some reports suggesting he could have travelled to Spain. Scotland Yard and border agencies are continuing investigations into his whereabouts.
The case has sparked renewed scrutiny of the UK prison system after several recent incidents involving mistaken prisoner releases.
