Local government workers in Borno State have staged a protest over the non-implementation of the ₦70,000 minimum wage, expressing frustration over worsening economic hardship.
The protest, held in Maiduguri, was organised by the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress as part of activities marking International Workers’ Day.
Speaking during the demonstration, NLC Chairman Yusuf Inuwa said local government workers are among the worst affected by rising living costs, noting that their current earnings cannot sustain them even for a week.
He stressed that the ₦70,000 minimum wage, agreed at the national level, is a legal entitlement for all workers, but lamented that many local government employees in the state have not been captured in its implementation.
The workers also highlighted inequality in payment, noting that while primary school teachers and healthcare workers are benefiting from the new wage, local government staff remain excluded.
The state government had earlier explained that implementation challenges stem from an over-bloated workforce, with about 90,000 employees across 27 LGAs, making it difficult to meet wage obligations with available allocations.
