A major power outage has affected five northern Nigerian states and parts of neighbouring Niger Republic following a disturbance on the national grid and transmission infrastructure serving the region.
The blackout reportedly impacted Kano, Katsina, Jigawa, Yobe, and Borno states, leaving millions of residents and businesses without electricity for several hours. Parts of southern Niger Republic, which receive power through interconnection arrangements with Nigeria, were also affected.
According to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), the disruption was linked to a fault on a major transmission line supplying electricity to the affected areas. Engineers were immediately deployed to identify and rectify the problem.
Power distribution companies operating in the region confirmed the outage and appealed to customers for patience while repair and restoration work continued.
The interruption reportedly affected homes, hospitals, businesses, telecommunications facilities, and other essential services across the region.
TCN stated that efforts were underway to restore supply as quickly as possible and assured consumers that the fault was being addressed by technical teams.
The incident has renewed concerns about the reliability of Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure, which continues to face challenges including transmission faults, grid disturbances, and inadequate generation capacity.
