Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has cast his vote in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primary election ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Atiku voted at the Ajiya Ward Polling Unit in Jimeta, Yola, Adamawa State, during the nationwide direct primary conducted by the ADC across Nigeria’s 8,809 wards.
The former presidential candidate participated alongside other party members and supporters as the opposition party commenced the process of selecting its presidential flagbearer for the 2027 election.
Speaking after voting, Atiku described the exercise as a demonstration of democratic participation and expressed optimism about the party’s future.
“I joined other prospective voters of the African Democratic Congress in our party’s presidential primaries in casting my vote at the Ajiya Ward Polling Unit in Jimeta Yola, Adamawa State. This is democracy at work,” Atiku said in a statement shared on X.
The ADC presidential contest features Atiku Abubakar, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, and economist Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, all cleared by the party’s National Working Committee led by former Senate President David Mark.
Reports indicate that the primary election is being conducted using the Option A4 voting system, where accredited members queue openly behind their preferred aspirants.
The exercise comes amid growing political activities and coalition efforts ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with the ADC positioning itself as a major opposition platform.
Meanwhile, results from some states have already begun emerging, with Atiku reportedly recording strong performances in several northern states while Amaechi gained support in parts of the South-South and South-East.
