Fresh political tensions have emerged in Rivers State after the All Progressives Congress (APC) disqualified four loyalists of Governor Siminalayi Fubara from participating in the party’s House of Representatives primaries ahead of the 2027 elections.

According to the final list released by the APC screening committee, 21 aspirants were cleared to contest in the primaries scheduled for Saturday, while several politicians believed to be aligned with Governor Fubara failed to scale through the screening process.

Among those reportedly disqualified are serving lawmakers Awaji-Inombek Abiante and Boma Goodhead, both widely regarded as strong allies of the Rivers governor. The development has further intensified the ongoing political rivalry between supporters of Governor Fubara and loyalists of former Rivers governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

The APC screening exercise comes amid growing uncertainty over the political future of Rivers State ahead of the 2027 general elections. In recent months, the state has remained politically divided following the fallout between Fubara and Wike, whose influence continues to shape the structure of both the APC and PDP in the state.

Political observers believe the latest disqualifications may deepen existing tensions within the party, especially as supporters of the governor interpret the move as an attempt to weaken Fubara’s influence within Rivers APC structures. At the same time, many aspirants linked to Wike’s political camp were successfully cleared by the party’s screening committee.

The APC has not publicly provided detailed reasons for the disqualifications, although earlier screening reports cited issues such as incomplete documentation, party membership irregularities, and other procedural concerns in similar cases.
