Civil society organisation ActionAid Nigeria has called for investigations and possible impeachment of any governor found using public funds to finance political campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The organisation said it was alarmed by reports suggesting that some serving governors may have mobilised massive financial resources for political activities and power consolidation efforts.
In a statement signed by its Country Director, Andrew Mamedu, ActionAid described the alleged diversion of state resources for campaigns as “outrageous, reckless, immoral, and completely unacceptable.”
According to the group, public funds meant for healthcare, education, security, and welfare should not be converted into “political war chests” while Nigerians face economic hardship, rising debt, inflation, and insecurity.
ActionAid demanded:
- Immediate public explanations from governors allegedly linked to the reports
- Investigations by the EFCC, ICPC, and state assemblies
- Prosecution and impeachment of any governor found culpable.
The organisation also warned that misuse of state resources could undermine democratic fairness by giving incumbents an unfair advantage ahead of the 2027 elections.
Mamedu urged Nigerians, civil society groups, and whistleblowers to remain vigilant and report any suspected abuse of public resources for partisan political purposes.
