The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the death of 17 police officers following a deadly terrorist attack on the Nigerian Army Special Forces School in Buni Yadi, Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State.
According to police authorities, the officers were undergoing specialised counter-terrorism and tactical training at the military institution when heavily armed terrorists launched a coordinated assault on the facility in the early hours of May 8, 2026.
The Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid, said the attackers stormed the training school from multiple directions at about 1:15 a.m., leading to an intense gun battle between security personnel and the insurgents. Several personnel of the Nigerian Army were also reportedly killed while repelling the attack.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Nigeria Police Force described the slain officers as gallant personnel who “paid the supreme price in service to the nation.”
Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased officers and praised their courage and patriotism. He noted that the fallen officers were participating in advanced operational training aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s fight against terrorism and insurgency.
Following the attack, the Commissioner of Police in Yobe State, CP Usman Kanfani Jibrin, visited the military institution on behalf of the Inspector-General to commiserate with the Nigerian Army and surviving officers.
Security agencies have continued operations in the North-East as Nigeria battles persistent attacks linked to Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP). Authorities say efforts are ongoing to track down those responsible for the assault.
