A former commissioner under Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum, Mustapha Gubio, has officially joined the governorship race after picking up the All Progressives Congress (APC) nomination form ahead of the next election.

Gubio, who until recently served as Commissioner for Works and Housing, reportedly presented the nomination form to Governor Zulum in Maiduguri alongside Senator Mohammed Tahir Monguno, in what observers see as an early signal of political realignments within the ruling party in Borno.

His move makes him the first aspirant known to have obtained the APC governorship nomination form in the state, formally opening the contest for the party’s ticket. Reports indicate the nomination and expression of interest forms cost ₦50 million.

Gubio’s entry follows the earlier dissolution of Borno’s State Executive Council by Governor Zulum, a move the government said was intended to create room for commissioners interested in pursuing elective offices.

A former commissioner for Reconstruction, Rehabilitation and Resettlement before heading the Works Ministry, Gubio is widely associated with infrastructure and post-insurgency rebuilding projects in the state, credentials analysts say may shape his campaign message.

His declaration is expected to intensify political activity in Borno, with more aspirants likely to emerge as APC consultations and internal alignments gather momentum.
