A fresh political clash has erupted after Femi Fani-Kayode strongly criticised Peter Obi over comments linked to Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggle.
The controversy began when Obi made remarks suggesting that late military ruler Sani Abacha could be seen as more democratic than some activists from the National Democratic Coalition era comments that triggered widespread backlash.
Reacting sharply, Fani-Kayode described Obi’s statement as offensive and deeply disrespectful to those who fought against military rule, particularly individuals who lost their lives and freedom during the June 12 struggle.
He accused Obi of mocking the sacrifices of NADECO members, insisting that such remarks undermine Nigeria’s democratic history and the pain endured during years of dictatorship.
In a strongly worded response, Fani-Kayode went further to attack Obi’s political future, declaring that:
he would “never become President” of Nigeria.
The exchange has added to ongoing political tensions, especially amid wider debates surrounding party realignments and leadership struggles ahead of the 2027 elections.
