Nollywood actress Victoria Inyama has sparked widespread reactions after opening up about her experience with female circumcision (FGM), describing it as both traumatic and, controversially, beneficial in her personal life.Speaking during an Instagram Live session, the actress revealed that she was circumcised as a child (around age five or six) while living with her grandmother in the village. She recounted that the procedure involved being given a substance that made her feel faint before being held down and cut.
Inyama admitted the experience was painful and traumatic, especially as she began bleeding afterward and feared for her life.
However, in a controversial twist, she said the experience later had a lasting impact on her sexual behaviour, claiming it helped her control her sexual urges. She described it as “the best thing that happened to me,” even while acknowledging that female genital mutilation is harmful.
Despite her personal stance, the actress noted that she did not subject her own children to the practice, suggesting a level of caution or awareness about its implications.
Her comments have since triggered intense debate online, with many criticising the endorsement of a practice widely condemned by global health organisations as a violation of human rights, while others pointed out the complexity of personal experiences shaped by culture and upbringing.
