Turkish President Recep Tayyip ErdoÄŸan has dismissed the country’s deputy education minister following two deadly school shootings that left nine people dead and triggered nationwide outrage over school safety.
According to an official decree published in the government gazette, Deputy Education Minister Nazif Yilmaz was removed from office and replaced by Cihad Demirli after the attacks shocked the country.
The move followed two separate shootings in Kahramanmaraş and Şanlıurfa, including one attack in which a 14-year-old student opened fire at a school, killing eight students and a teacher. A separate school attack also left multiple people injured, deepening concerns over security in Turkish schools.
The dismissals came amid growing pressure on the government after teachers staged protests and opposition voices demanded accountability over what they described as failures in school safety and firearms control.
The Turkish government has since announced plans for tighter gun regulations and stronger school security measures, including increased oversight on firearm access and broader safety reforms.
