The embassy announced that visa services in Abuja have been suspended, directing affected applicants to check their emails for details on rescheduled appointments. Despite the disruption in the capital, visa processing continues at the U.S. Consulate in Lagos, while emergency services for American citizens remain available by appointment.
The decision comes shortly after the U.S. government authorised the evacuation of non-essential embassy staff and their families due to what it described as a deteriorating security situation. The updated advisory places Nigeria under a “Reconsider Travel” warning, citing threats such as terrorism, kidnapping, crime, and civil unrest.
Officials did not specify how long the suspension will last, but the move signals heightened concern over safety conditions in the country, particularly in areas considered high-risk.
For visa applicants, the development introduces fresh uncertainty, while also reflecting how rising insecurity is beginning to affect not just local communities but international operations and diplomatic activities within Nigeria.
