Thai authorities have confiscated a massive 1.6 tonnes of illegal drugs that were hidden beneath a large shipment of cabbages at a major border checkpoint.
According to police, the narcotics were discovered after they grew suspicious of the way the vegetables had been packed and ordered a more thorough inspection. When officers opened several crates, they found packages of illicit drugs concealed underneath the produce a tactic traffickers were using to evade detection.
Officials say the haul is one of the largest drug seizures in recent Thai‑law enforcement operations and underscores the increasingly sophisticated methods criminal syndicates use to smuggle contraband.
Authorities have not yet released details about the specific type of drugs seized or how many suspects have been arrested in connection with the bust. However, the discovery has been hailed as a significant blow to organised trafficking networks that exploit legitimate supply chains to move prohibited substances.
Thai police say they will continue to investigate leads and track down those responsible, and have warned smugglers that law enforcement will step up surveillance and inspections at key transit points.
