A dispute has emerged between the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company over power transmission capacity and allocation issues.

The disagreement centers on claims by the Port Harcourt DisCo that it is not receiving sufficient electricity to meet demand, while TCN insists that the issue is not transmission limitations but rather operational and distribution challenges on the part of DisCos.

TCN explained that electricity allocation is based on what each distribution company requests (nominates) ahead of time, adding that once power is transmitted, it becomes the responsibility of the DisCo to distribute it efficiently within its coverage area.

Data from the national grid shows that Port Harcourt DisCo receives a defined share of available electricity like other DisCos but the total supply itself is currently constrained by low generation levels, largely due to gas supply shortages affecting power plants.

The transmission company also pointed to infrastructure challenges and vandalism of transmission lines as additional factors affecting the amount of power that can be wheeled across the grid.

At the core of the clash is a familiar issue in Nigeria’s power sector:

  • DisCos blame inadequate supply from the grid
  • TCN insists the real problem lies in distribution inefficiencies and demand management
