Violence erupted at the Owo Local Government Secretariat in Ondo State after suspected thugs reportedly attacked and stripped the council chairman, Tope Omolayo, during a dramatic confrontation over his return to office.
Reports said Omolayo had resumed duties after serving a six-month suspension when the attackers allegedly stormed the secretariat, assaulted him, tore his clothes and left him nearly naked. Witnesses also said gunshots were fired into the air, causing panic as workers and residents fled for safety.
The crisis is believed to be linked to lingering tensions surrounding Omolayo’s suspension and unresolved disputes within the local government. Some reports also tied the unrest to an earlier controversy involving remarks allegedly made about the Olowo of Owo, which had sparked tensions in the community.
Police in Ondo State said security personnel were swiftly deployed to the secretariat to restore order and prevent further breakdown of law and order. Authorities added that investigations have begun to identify those behind the attack and bring perpetrators to justice.
