Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has shut down campus and directed students to proceed on a three-week mid-semester break following protests over transportation and welfare concerns.
The decision was approved by the university Senate and took immediate effect after a student protest over the newly introduced transport system escalated, with demonstrators reportedly blocking major access roads and disrupting movement around the campus.
The protest was driven by complaints over inadequate transportation, long queues, accommodation concerns and issues linked to the university’s e-portal system. Students had earlier staged a lecture boycott before moving to a broader demonstration to press their demands.
In a statement, the university said the shutdown was necessary to restore order, protect safety and create room for dialogue with stakeholders over the unresolved crisis. Authorities also directed students to vacate halls of residence during the break.
The closure marks a major escalation in the transport crisis that has unsettled the campus in recent weeks and is expected to intensify pressure on management to reach a resolution before students return.
