Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has questioned the effectiveness of President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms, arguing that the federal government has mismanaged the economy despite repeated claims that the policies are delivering results.

Sowore specifically criticised the removal of fuel subsidy, saying the policy has brought deeper hardship for ordinary Nigerians rather than the relief promised by the government. He argued that while officials have pointed to savings from the reform, everyday Nigerians are facing rising transport costs, inflation, and worsening living conditions.

He also challenged the government’s narrative around economic recovery, insisting that macroeconomic claims do not reflect realities on the ground. According to him, reforms should be judged by their impact on citizens’ welfare, not by official projections or policy announcements.

Sowore further accused the government of imposing pain on low-income Nigerians while political elites continue to benefit from state privileges, describing the policy direction as unfair and poorly managed. He argued that the administration’s handling of the economy has worsened poverty instead of addressing structural problems.

His comments add to ongoing debates over Tinubu’s reform agenda, particularly as concerns over inflation, the naira, and cost-of-living pressures continue to dominate public discourse.

While the government has maintained that its reforms are necessary for long-term stability, Sowore insists the policies, as implemented, have deepened hardship and exposed what he called economic mismanagement.
