The Catholic Diocese of Sokoto has dismissed a viral video circulating online that allegedly shows the burning of a cathedral and the residence of Bishop Matthew Kukah, describing it as false and misleading.

Church authorities clarified that no such incident occurred, stressing that the video being shared does not reflect the current reality in Sokoto. The clarification comes amid growing panic triggered by the widely circulated footage on social media.

The denial aligns with statements from security sources and church officials who noted that claims of a complete burning of the cathedral or Kukah’s residence are untrue.

While authorities acknowledged that there have been isolated incidents of unrest and misinformation online, they emphasised that the viral content is being wrongly linked to Sokoto.

This is not the first time such claims have surfaced. In previous similar situations, Bishop Matthew Kukah himself publicly debunked rumours that his residence was attacked or burnt, stating clearly that no such destruction took place.

Officials have urged the public to verify information before sharing, warning that fake videos and recycled footage can escalate tensions and create unnecessary fear.
