Severe flooding triggered by hours of heavy rainfall has left widespread destruction in Jalingo, the Taraba State capital, with residents counting losses after floodwaters submerged homes and damaged property.
The flooding reportedly began after torrential rain started around 3:00 a.m., overwhelming drainage channels and inundating several neighbourhoods, particularly the Mile Six axis and areas around Excellence International School, which were among the hardest hit.
Residents said rising floodwaters swept through compounds, displaced household belongings, damaged structures, washed away access paths and left debris scattered across affected communities. No fatalities were immediately confirmed, but significant material losses were reported.
The incident has renewed concerns over poor drainage infrastructure in Jalingo, with many residents blaming blocked or inadequate drainage systems for worsening the impact of the flooding. Community members also warned of possible health risks from stagnant floodwaters, including waterborne diseases.
Affected residents have called on the government to urgently intervene through improved drainage works and long-term flood control measures, especially as the rainy season intensifies.
The latest flooding adds to recurring concerns over flood vulnerability in Taraba, with authorities facing growing pressure to prevent further disasters in the state.
