Electricity consumers in seven northern states are set to experience weeks of power disruptions as Nigeria begins a major grid modernisation project.
According to the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), the outage will affect:
- Plateau
- Gombe
- Bauchi
- Borno
- Adamawa
- Taraba
- Yobe
The planned outage will run from April 9 to May 22, 2026, occurring weekly from Thursday to Sunday between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
The disruption is linked to work on the Jos–Gombe 330kV transmission line, where authorities are installing Optical Ground Wire fibre optic infrastructure as part of efforts to modernise the national grid.
Officials explained that the upgrade will:
- Improve real-time monitoring of the grid
- Enhance fault detection and response time
- Strengthen load balancing and system stability
Although alternative supply routes will be used during the outage, the operator warned that power supply will be limited due to the lower capacity of backup transmission lines.
Authorities say the temporary inconvenience is necessary to achieve long-term improvements in electricity reliability, particularly in the North-East and North-Central regions where infrastructure challenges persist.
