The Osun State Police Command has cautioned private security outfits and vigilante groups against brutalising suspects, stressing the need to uphold proper legal procedures during arrests.

The warning was issued by the Area Commander of Iwo, ACP Temitayo Ogunjemilusin, during a security summit held in Iwo, where stakeholders gathered to address rising criminal activities in the area.

According to the police, suspects must not be dehumanised, beaten, or tortured, as such actions can complicate investigations and weaken prosecution in court. Ogunjemilusin emphasized that:

suspects should not be brought to the station “barely alive” after arrest.

He explained that when suspects are abused, it can:

  • Undermine evidence
  • Affect proper documentation of cases
  • Lead to dismissal of charges in court

The police also urged private security operatives to ensure that arrested individuals are properly handed over to law enforcement agencies, with accurate statements and supporting evidence to aid prosecution.

The meeting, organised by the Ta’awunu security group, brought together various stakeholders, including representatives from the NDLEA and NSCDC, to strengthen collaboration in tackling crime across communities.
