Security operatives in Sokoto State have foiled a coordinated bandit attack on communities in the state, killing one suspected assailant during a gun battle and forcing others to flee.

The attack reportedly targeted Illela Village in Achida Town and Kwargaba Hamlet, where armed bandits launched a midnight assault before police tactical teams and anti-kidnapping operatives responded following a distress call.

According to police sources, operatives came under heavy gunfire on arrival, leading to a fierce exchange during which one bandit reportedly dressed in military camouflage was neutralised, while other attackers escaped with suspected gunshot wounds into nearby forest areas.

Authorities said the swift intervention prevented the attackers from carrying out a larger assault on the communities. However, a local vigilante member was reportedly killed by the bandits before security reinforcements arrived.

Following the operation, security forces launched a manhunt for fleeing suspects, with search efforts focused on the Gundumi Forest and surrounding areas believed to be possible escape routes.

The Sokoto State Police Command urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements, stressing that efforts to curb banditry and secure vulnerable communities remain ongoing.
