The Kwara State Police Command has arrested 42 suspected illegal miners in connection with the abduction of the traditional ruler of Olayinka community in Ifelodun Local Government Area, Oba Salman Olatunji Aweda.
The incident reportedly occurred when armed men stormed the monarch’s palace, abducting him and his brother after allegedly demanding money earlier collected from visiting miners as settlement or “royalty.”
According to police authorities, the attackers broke into the palace, forced their way through doors, and whisked the monarch away. His brother was later released after struggling to keep up with the abductors during movement.
Following the abduction, the Kwara State Police Command immediately launched a coordinated operation involving tactical units and surveillance support, including drones, to track down those responsible.
The operation led to the arrest of 42 illegal miners found operating within the community shortly after the incident. However, police have clarified that investigations are still ongoing to determine their exact involvement in the abduction.
A senior police official confirmed that while the arrests were made in connection with the incident, it is yet to be established whether all the suspects directly participated in the kidnapping of the monarch.
All suspects are currently in police custody at the Kwara State Command Headquarters in Ilorin as security operatives continue interrogations and search efforts to uncover the masterminds behind the attack.
