A fresh industrial action may be looming in Plateau State as the Joint Union of Plateau State-owned Tertiary Institutions (JUPTI) has threatened to embark on an indefinite strike from Monday over unresolved welfare and administrative demands.

The union said the warning followed what it described as the state government’s failure to address longstanding issues affecting workers across tertiary institutions under its purview. Key demands include implementation of agreements, payment-related concerns, and improved conditions of service.

JUPTI said repeated engagements with the government had not yielded meaningful results, warning that members could withdraw services if authorities fail to act before the deadline. The union argued that continued delays have heightened frustration among workers and threatened industrial harmony within the institutions.

Union leaders also stressed that the proposed action is aimed at compelling government intervention rather than disrupting academic activities, but warned that failure to resolve the issues could affect teaching, administration and the academic calendar across affected institutions.

The development adds to broader tensions in Nigeria’s tertiary education sector, where staff unions have continued to press for improved welfare and implementation of agreements. Stakeholders are now calling for urgent dialogue to avert a full-blown strike in Plateau State.
