The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has criticised participants at the opposition summit held in Ibadan, dismissing the gathering convened by Governor Seyi Makinde as politically ineffective and incapable of challenging the ruling party ahead of the 2027 elections.
The summit brought together prominent opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi and host Seyi Makinde, where discussions reportedly focused on coalition-building and strategies to challenge the APC in the next general election.
Reacting, the Oyo APC described some attendees as “opposition jesters” and “clownish characters,” insisting the summit posed no threat to President Bola Tinubu or the ruling party. The party argued the opposition lacks cohesion, credibility and the political strength required to unseat the APC.
The party also faulted remarks credited to Governor Makinde regarding “Operation Wetie,” describing the comment as provocative and warning against rhetoric capable of inciting unrest. APC officials insisted the 2027 elections would be peaceful and credible despite opposition posturing.
According to the Oyo APC, the Ibadan meeting was more symbolic than strategic, maintaining that opposition leaders are “wasting their time” if they believe the alliance can dislodge the ruling party.
