Students of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, have embarked on a 72-hour lecture boycott in protest against ongoing transportation challenges on campus.
The action, announced by the Students’ Union Government, is scheduled to run from April 14 to April 16, 2026, following weeks of frustration over what students described as an “inadequate and poorly implemented” transport system.
According to the union, the introduction of a new transport system—linked to buses and tricycles donated to the university—has led to long queues, overcrowding, insufficient vehicles, and limited route coverage, making movement around campus difficult.
Students also complained that the situation is worse for those living off-campus, who now face higher transport costs and delays due to the removal of alternative transport options.
The union has demanded:
- Immediate provision of more buses and tricycles
- Temporary return to the previous transport system
- Better consultation with student leaders before changes
They warned that if their demands are not met after the 72-hour boycott, the protest could escalate into a mass demonstration.
University management had earlier described the situation as a “teething phase”, assuring students that improvements would be made, but the union insists that conditions remain difficult.
The development highlights growing tension between students and management over campus mobility in one of Nigeria’s largest universities.
