The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has raised serious concerns over what it described as the Independent National Electoral Commission’s persistent disobedience to court orders, warning that such actions could endanger Nigeria’s democracy and disrupt preparations for the 2027 general elections.

The party accused INEC of failing to comply with a Federal Capital Territory High Court judgment directing the commission to recognise the Dr. Agbo Major-led National Working Committee of the party and update its records accordingly. According to the NNPP, weeks after the judgment and expiration of the compliance timeline, the electoral body has yet to act.

Reacting to the development, the party described INEC’s conduct as disturbing and a threat to the rule of law, arguing that an electoral body entrusted with overseeing democratic processes should not be seen disregarding valid court orders. The party warned that continued non-compliance could trigger fresh legal battles capable of affecting the country’s electoral timetable.

The NNPP also disclosed plans to initiate contempt proceedings against the commission if the matter is not resolved, insisting it is prepared to pursue the case up to the Supreme Court. It called on key institutions, including the Attorney-General of the Federation, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, and the Nigerian Bar Association, to intervene and safeguard the integrity of the judiciary.

According to the party, the dispute goes beyond internal leadership recognition and touches on broader democratic principles, particularly the respect for judicial authority and equal participation of political parties in the electoral process. Party officials argued that ignoring court orders could set a dangerous precedent capable of undermining confidence in democratic institutions.
