Nigerian onion exporters have suspended shipments to Ghana, citing repeated harassment, improper levies, and illegal seizures of their trucks at border points.

Traders say that over the past few months, their vehicles laden with onions have been stopped by security and immigration officials at various checkpoints along the Nigeria–Ghana corridor, where they are allegedly forced to pay multiple levies and sometimes have goods confiscated without justification.

According to the National President of the Onion Traders Association, these disruptions have escalated transport costs, caused significant delays, and reduced profit margins, making the trade unsustainable under current conditions.

He noted that the situation has led to postponement of new export consignments as exporters now reassess the risks of sending goods across the border, especially with continuing reports of arbitrary levies and seizures.

The affected traders are calling on authorities in Nigeria and Ghana to intervene and address the alleged harassment and procedural irregularities at border posts, warning that prolonged disruptions could harm both countries’ agricultural trade relations.
