A Nigerian healthcare professional has been struck off the UK professional register after being found to have used ChatGPT during a remote job interview for a role in the National Health Service (NHS).
According to reports, the woman identified as a registered dietician used the AI tool to generate answers in real time during a virtual interview conducted via Microsoft Teams while she was still in Nigeria.
Interview panel members became suspicious after noticing a pattern in her responses. She reportedly asked for questions to be repeated and then echoed them slowly, a tactic believed to buy time while retrieving AI-generated answers.
To confirm their concerns, one of the interviewers input the same questions into ChatGPT and observed striking similarities between the AI responses and the candidate’s answers. Multiple panel members concluded that she had relied on external assistance during both the interview and a follow-up case study.
Following an investigation, the case was taken to the Health and Care Professions Tribunal Service (HCPTS), which ruled that her actions amounted to dishonesty. She was subsequently removed from the professional register, effectively ending her ability to practice in the UK.
The tribunal also heard that while she answered general questions confidently, she struggled with clinical questions further raising concerns about the authenticity of her responses.
