The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Friday, May 1, 2026, a public holiday to mark this year’s International Workers’ Day.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the government, with officials commending Nigerian workers for their contributions to national development.
According to the government, Workers’ Day is an opportunity to recognise the role of labour in driving economic growth, while also encouraging workers to remain committed to productivity, patriotism and nation-building.
The minister also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving workers’ welfare, security and creating a more conducive environment for economic progress.
Workers’ Day (May Day) is observed globally every May 1 to celebrate workers and the labour movement.
