The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has received 181 Nigerian returnees evacuated from Libya, including 12 children, 10 infants and 159 adults, as efforts continue to assist stranded citizens abroad.

The returnees arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, on April 27 aboard an Air Buraq Airline flight under the Assisted Voluntary Return programme facilitated by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in collaboration with the Federal Government.

According to NEMA, the 159 adults comprised 64 males and 95 females, while the 12 children included five boys and seven girls, and the 10 infants comprised six males and four females.

On arrival, officials of the Nigeria Immigration Service reportedly conducted biometric registration and documentation, while the returnees received humanitarian support including food, water, medical attention, counselling and logistics assistance.

NEMA said the evacuation forms part of the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring the safe and dignified return of Nigerians caught in difficult conditions abroad, particularly along irregular migration routes through Libya.

The latest batch comes weeks after another group of Nigerian returnees was evacuated from Benghazi, Libya, highlighting continuing concerns over unsafe migration and the conditions many Nigerians face in transit countries.
