The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has backed a 48-hour warning strike by medical doctors in Delta State following the alleged assault of a healthcare worker.
The action was triggered after a doctor was reportedly attacked while on duty, an incident that sparked outrage within the medical community and led to calls for immediate industrial action in protest.
NARD expressed solidarity with the Delta State chapter of the association, describing the assault as unacceptable and part of a growing pattern of violence against health workers across the country. The body insisted that doctors must be protected while carrying out their duties in hospitals and other medical facilities.
The association also warned that failure by authorities to address the incident and ensure justice could lead to a wider escalation of industrial action beyond the initial 48-hour warning strike.
Health workers have repeatedly raised concerns over safety in hospitals, citing cases of harassment and physical attacks during emergency situations, especially when outcomes are unfavourable for patients or families.
Authorities in Delta State are expected to engage with stakeholders to resolve the dispute and prevent disruption of healthcare services.
