Several people were injured after violence erupted during a top-flight football match in Paraguay between Club Olimpia and Cerro Porteño.

The match, played at the Defensores del Chaco Stadium in Asunción, was suspended after just 29 minutes when clashes broke out between fans and police.

Reports say the chaos started when high-powered firecrackers were set off in the section allocated to Cerro Porteño supporters, triggering panic and confrontation with security forces.

Witnesses described how some fans overpowered a police officer and seized his riot shield, escalating tensions inside the stadium.

Police responded by firing tear gas and rubber bullets into the stands to control the situation, forcing hundreds of spectators to run onto the pitch as smoke filled parts of the stadium.

Several injuries were recorded, including police officers, some of whom reportedly suffered serious wounds and were taken to hospital.

Authorities have since launched investigations, with dozens of people detained, while football officials are expected to decide the fate of the abandoned match.
