The Lagos State Government has rescued a malnourished child who was allegedly abandoned and neglected after being accused of witchcraft in a viral social media case.
The incident came to light after an X user raised alarm over the condition of the toddler, who was seen in a distressed state and reportedly left without proper care in a community in Lagos. The post claimed the child had been abandoned by her mother based on a belief that she was a witch.
Following the viral report, officials of the Lagos State Government, led by the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, intervened and traced the location provided online. The child was subsequently rescued and placed under government protection for urgent care and rehabilitation.
Authorities confirmed that the child is now in safe custody while investigations are ongoing to verify the circumstances surrounding the allegations of neglect and abuse.
The case has once again drawn attention to the issue of children accused of witchcraft, a practice that has led to repeated cases of abuse, abandonment, and in some instances, death in different parts of the country.
Officials say further updates will be provided as investigations continue and appropriate actions are taken against those responsible.
