Children in Katsina State have raised serious concerns over the growing impact of climate change on their schools, warning that deteriorating environmental conditions are putting their health, safety, and education at risk.

The concerns were voiced by members of a Child Rights Advocacy Club in Mashi Local Government Area, who engaged local authorities and traditional leaders, urging immediate intervention.

According to the students, a combination of flooding, poor sanitation, extreme heat, and environmental degradation has made many schools unsafe and unconducive for learning. They said these challenges are already affecting attendance, comfort, and overall well-being in classrooms.

The children outlined specific demands, including:

  • Provision of clean and reliable water sources in schools
  • Construction and maintenance of safe toilets with hand-washing facilities
  • Improved waste management and drainage systems to prevent flooding
  • Tree planting and greener school environments to reduce heat
  • Better school security and fencing to protect facilities

They also highlighted that blocked drainage systems and poor environmental practices are worsening flooding around schools, while deforestation and heat are making learning conditions increasingly difficult.

In response, local authorities acknowledged the concerns and pledged to take action, including enforcing environmental regulations and improving school conditions.
