Former Kogi West senator and ADC chieftain Dino Melaye has asked President Bola Tinubu to resign over worsening insecurity, arguing that the federal government has failed in its constitutional duty to protect lives and property.
In a video statement shared on Sunday, Melaye described the country’s security situation as “pitiable,” citing persistent killings, kidnappings and attacks by bandits and insurgents as evidence of what he called a deteriorating security architecture. He argued that Nigerians are living in fear while government promises have not translated into improved safety.
Melaye specifically pointed to the recent killings of senior military officers and repeated attacks in parts of the country as signs that the government has lost control. He said the administration had failed to deliver on the constitutional obligation that security and welfare remain the primary responsibility of government.
The former lawmaker also criticised Nigeria’s increasing reliance on foreign support in addressing security threats, describing it as a national embarrassment for a country with Nigeria’s military history and regional influence.
His remarks add to growing political criticism over insecurity ahead of the 2027 elections, with opposition voices using the issue to intensify pressure on the Tinubu administration. However, the presidency has not issued an official response to Melaye’s call for resignation.
