The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has warned Nigerians against rising cases of digital impersonation and online fraud targeting the commission, urging the public to rely only on its verified communication channels.

INEC said it has observed the circulation of fake social media accounts, fraudulent websites, and misleading posts created to imitate official statements and misinform the public, particularly ahead of upcoming electoral activities.

The commission stressed that it does not operate unofficial recruitment links, unauthorised social media handles, or third-party platforms for communication, warning that such impersonation schemes are often used by cybercriminals to spread false information or defraud unsuspecting citizens.

INEC further advised Nigerians to verify any information attributed to the commission through its official website and verified social media pages, noting that misinformation and disinformation remain a major threat to public trust in the electoral process.

The warning comes amid broader concerns over the spread of fake news and coordinated online manipulation targeting institutions ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the commission reiterating its commitment to transparency, credibility, and voter education.

Officials also encouraged members of the public to report suspicious online activity claiming to represent INEC, as part of efforts to curb digital fraud and protect the integrity of electoral communication.
