Former Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, reportedly resigned from President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet despite efforts by the President to persuade him to stay, according to sources familiar with the development.

Adelabu tendered his resignation in a letter dated April 22, 2026, saying he was stepping down to pursue his governorship ambition in Oyo State ahead of the 2027 elections. His resignation takes effect on April 30 to allow for a smooth transition.

Reports indicate President Tinubu had tried to dissuade Adelabu from leaving the cabinet, preferring he remain in office, but the former minister insisted on resigning to focus fully on his political ambition.

Adelabu’s exit also came 22 days after the March 31 deadline set for political appointees seeking elective office to resign, making his decision stand out from earlier departures by other ministers.

Insiders said Adelabu viewed the resignation as necessary to position himself early for the Oyo governorship race, arguing that staying in office could affect his political preparations. His move is seen as reshaping the political equation in Oyo State ahead of the next electoral cycle.

However, there have been conflicting accounts over whether the resignation was truly against Tinubu’s wishes. Adelabu’s media team has pushed back on that narrative, insisting he consulted the President and obtained his approval before stepping down.
