The Government of Ghana has summoned South Africa’s Acting High Commissioner following renewed reports of xenophobic incidents targeting foreign nationals in South Africa, including Ghanaians.
The meeting was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Accra, where Ghanaian authorities expressed concern over recent cases of harassment and intimidation allegedly faced by some Ghanaian residents in South Africa.
According to diplomatic sources, Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister raised the issue after videos and reports circulating online suggested that foreign nationals were being targeted in certain parts of South Africa.
The South African envoy acknowledged the concerns and assured Ghana that the incidents were being addressed by relevant authorities, with investigations reportedly underway to prevent further escalation.
Ghana also used the meeting to demand stronger protection for its citizens living in South Africa and called for swift action to ensure their safety and dignity.
The diplomatic engagement forms part of ongoing efforts by both countries to manage tensions arising from recurring xenophobic attacks in South Africa, which have historically affected migrants from other African nations.
Officials say further discussions between both governments are expected as they work to prevent a repeat of past violent incidents and maintain strong bilateral relations.
