The Federal Government has issued an early flood warning for parts of Nigeria, cautioning that heavy rainfall between April 8 and April 12, 2026 could trigger flooding in vulnerable communities.


The alert was released by the National Flood Early Warning Centre under the Federal Ministry of Environment, urging residents and authorities to prepare ahead of possible impact.  

The warning affects communities across the following 10 states:


  • Ebonyi
  • Anambra
  • Ogun
  • Taraba
  • Cross River
  • Benue
  • Imo
  • Delta
  • Rivers
  • Abia  



Specific locations mentioned include areas like Onitsha (Anambra), Ilaro (Ogun), Port Harcourt (Rivers), and Umuahia (Abia), among others. 

Officials warned that:


  • Intense rainfall may exceed drainage capacity
  • Flooding could affect both listed communities and surrounding areas
  • Early warnings are crucial to reduce loss of lives and property  



Residents, local governments, and emergency agencies have been advised to:


  • Clear drainage systems
  • Monitor weather updates
  • Activate emergency response plans
