The Federal Government has secured about $83 million in financing to expand off-grid electricity access across rural and underserved communities in Nigeria.

According to official details, the funding was backed by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) under the Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale-Up (DARES) programme, and is aimed at boosting the deployment of solar mini-grids and standalone solar systems in areas not connected to the national grid.

The initiative is expected to move Nigeria’s off-grid energy development from pilot projects into large-scale implementation, with private developers playing a key role in delivering power solutions to communities without reliable electricity.

Government officials say the financing structure combines blended capital (concessional and commercial funding) to make renewable energy projects more viable for investors and faster to deploy.

The programme is part of a broader national effort to close Nigeria’s electricity access gap, where millions of households still rely on generators due to unstable grid supply. The DARES initiative is also expected to significantly expand electricity access while supporting small businesses and rural economic activity.

Authorities noted that the investment reflects growing confidence in Nigeria’s renewable energy sector and will help accelerate energy delivery to communities currently excluded from the national grid.
