A former Ivory Coast international footballer, Abdoulaye Traoré, has been sentenced to three years in prison for rape, according to reports from local and international media sources.

TraorĂ©, a well-known striker who was part of Ivory Coast’s squad that won the 1992 Africa Cup of Nations, was convicted following legal proceedings that ended with the court handing down the custodial sentence.

The case has drawn attention in Ivory Coast and beyond due to TraorĂ©’s status as a former national team star and one of West Africa’s prominent football figures during his playing career.

Reports indicate that the conviction marks one of the rare instances where a high-profile ex-athlete in the country has been sentenced for a sexual offence, highlighting growing calls for accountability regardless of social or sporting status.

Details surrounding the case remain limited in public reports, and it is still unclear whether Traoré intends to appeal the ruling or when he will begin serving his sentence.

Authorities and women’s rights advocates have described the ruling as an important step in strengthening justice for victims of sexual violence and reinforcing the rule of law in such cases.
