At least 11 people have been killed and over 50 houses destroyed following a fresh outbreak of violence in Nasarawa State.
The incident occurred in the Akyawa and Udege Kasa communities of the Udege Development Area in Nasarawa Local Government Area, where clashes erupted in the early hours of Friday.
According to police authorities, the attack was carried out by suspected hoodlums in a reprisal assault, allegedly linked to the earlier killing of two individuals from a rival group.
In the violence that followed:
- 11 residents lost their lives
- About 50 houses were burnt in Akyawa
- Additional homes were destroyed in Udege Kasa
The Nasarawa State Commissioner of Police, Shetima Jauro Mohammed, visited the affected communities and expressed deep sorrow over what was described as a “tragic and senseless” attack.
Authorities have since launched an intensive manhunt for the perpetrators, while security has been reinforced in the area with support from the military and other agencies to prevent further violence.
Residents, however, say the situation has become increasingly frightening, with recurring attacks forcing many to flee their homes amid uncertainty over future safety.
