The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors has announced that its members will embark on a nationwide indefinite strike starting Tuesday, April 7, 2026, over unresolved issues related to allowances and welfare.

The decision was reached during an emergency meeting, where the association accused the Federal Government of planning to halt the implementation of the revised Professional Allowance Table (PAT)—a key agreement reached after previous negotiations.

The PAT includes improved payments such as:

  • Call duty allowances
  • Shift allowances
  • Rural posting incentives
  • Non-clinical duty payments

Doctors say although implementation began earlier in the year, the government is now allegedly backtracking on the agreement, prompting the industrial action.

Beyond the allowance dispute, the association is also demanding:

  • Payment of salary and promotion arrears
  • Settlement of about 19 months’ outstanding allowance arrears
  • Release of the 2026 Medical Residency Training Fund

The strike is expected to significantly affect public hospitals nationwide, as resident doctors form a major part of Nigeria’s healthcare workforce, raising concerns about disruptions to medical services.
